As an Italian Civilization and Culture major I was happy to spend the majority of my weekends in Florence and around Italy - hiking and exploring. And as amazing as my trips to Cinque Terre or even places as close as Fiesole were - I wish I had spent more time traveling to other countries, not just around Italy - though the Amalfi Coast remains my favorite trip abroad to date.
Unlike most of you I have the opportunity at a second chance living abroad - so learn from my mistakes. You will have plenty of time during the school week to explore your new city, spend the weekends exploring everything else you possibly can! Go to Oktoberfest and drink a stein with 30,000 other people, go to Budapest and experience the thermal baths, do your Christmas shopping at the markets in Prague! Get over your fear of heights and do some skydiving in Interlaken - you won't regret anything you get out there and do - but you will regret what you don't do!
And if you don't want to take it from me, take it from Mark Twain: "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
