But, lucky for those of us to study and work here, an escape from Florence is just a bus - or train - ride away.
Fiesole is an ancient Etruscan town that dates back to the 9th-8th century BCE - and was eventually conquered by the Romans. Fiesole is a quick 15-20 minute bus ride away on the number 7 from San Marco. Go to Fiesole and see the Etruscan ruins, Roman baths, Roman theater, and more! The views on the bus ride up are worth it alone - and perfect for a few hours of retreat.
If you are looking for a day trip - don't forget Cinque Terre! The famous 5 villages on the coastline of the Italian Riviera. This is a great place to escape Florence for the day and enjoy some hiking, sea bathing, excellent cuisine, and breathtaking views of the coastline.
There are countless other quick trips you can take from Florence for a few hours or a day - including wine tastings throughout the Chianti region of Tuscany, bike tours throughout Tuscany - and much, much more!
