Female-Specific Packing Tips
Alright ladies, here’s some advice I wish someone had given to me when I came to Florence for my first semester! Hopefully it’s useful to you guys and if you have questions or think of something I haven’t mentioned, feel free to contribute.
If you’re into makeup and can’t live without it, by all means bring as much as you can, BUT there are Sephoras everywhere as well as many other stores that sell a wide-range of cosmetics. In Italy Kiko is a great alternative for those who wish to spend a little less for pretty great cosmetics. Nail Polish runs around 2 - 6€ and they have tons of varieties of everything you need.
Something that many girls don't think of bringing are feminine products. (Yeah, I went there) Seriously though, it is insanely difficult to find certain brands and when or IF you do, they are very expensive. I've told all my friends this before coming and they were always happy they did! Of course, you don't want to overload your bag with THAT stuff (imagine the look on the Italian airport security guard's face if he checks your bag?) so if you know you have parents/family/really good friends coming to visit, have them bring an, *ahem* replenishment.
If you’re on birth control currently, and plan on staying on it while in Italy – it’s important to see your doctor before you leave and let him or her know of your future travel plans so they can prescribe you enough medication for the time you’ll be away. I was able to get 3 months of my prescription so I was able to continue the medication without a problem. It IS possible to get certain medications in Italy but I’m sure it would involve a lot more complications and effort.
This is a great reference to look at if you need further information:
