Trattoria Mario, Via Rosina, 2, 50123 is only open for lunch, but has arguably the best Bistecca alla Fiorentina in the entire city! Even better, since it is served at lunch, it is considerably cheaper than other top quality restaurants around Florence! Mario’s also serves their steak by $/kg and not a set price per plate so you and friends can easily split the steak if you’re not feeling up for a huge steak at lunch. Furthermore, the Italians are very sensitive about the cooking of their steaks so don’t ask for anything above medium, and ideally you should try to get it medium rare or if you’re feeling like a local, still moo-ing.
Il Centro Supermercato - If you don’t have time for a sit down meal but still want some amazing cured meats; you need go no further than your closest il Centro, which is a common supermarket chain in Italy. Many il Centros around Florence offer a sandwich deal for 2.5 euros where you mix and match up to six toppings. I love il Centro sandwiches because they are the perfect travel food: tasty, cheap, wrapped, and good to go. This is particularly important when you’re in a rush to catch a train or a flight but don’t want to spend 10 euros on crumby airport food. One of the best things about il Centro is that they bake their own bread every day so you know what you’re getting is fresh! A favorite sandwiches of mine is the pesto spread, prosciutto, salami genoa, sun dried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, and mozzarella. It is so good, I often get two! So when you get to Florence keep an eye out for il Centros and their amazing sandwiches!
